Synopsis
An experimental music video to Sufjan Stevens’ “The Hidden River of My Life” utilizes elements of 2D animation, rotoscope, and live action to illustrate a cosmic, yet deeply intimate exploration of humanity: our past, our present, and the places we might go.
Artist Statement
Music, writing, filmmaking, and visual art each hold equal importance to my artistic identity; as a result, I’ve always struggled to find a focused and consistent way to express my creativity. It wasn’t until I began studying at Emily Carr that I fell in love with animation production and the ever-challenging ways I’m able to incorporate elements of all four. In my artistic practice, evidenced by my film, I’m interested in discovering the most affective marriage of sonic and visual elements, in pushing boundaries, and in honoring my passions for sincere and meaningful storytelling, the human condition, and beautiful design. Kate grew up overseas in Europe within an American family of six. Graduating from high school in 2011, she spent a few years in her home state of Wyoming expressing her creativity through more traditional visual mediums such as painting and illustration before moving to Vancouver in 2016 to study animation at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Looking forward, her goals are to direct and collaborate with filmmakers and musicians in crafting unique and stirring music videos.
