Synopsis
A visual and poetic exploration of the interrelationship between power lines and large birds of prey.
Artist Statement
I am a 2D animator and compositor whose work centers around the creation of character-driven narratives. Through the digital medium, I’ve continued to favour imagery of the natural world, highlighting technology’s impact on both the environment and the lives within it. The characters I create are brought to life through the use of angular shapes, linear compositions, and vibrant colors. Prey reflects on the effects of ever-present power lines on the birds of prey within their surrounding ecosystems. Adapted to nest and hunt from the nearest points to the sky, the birds themselves fall prey to the contemporary hunger for electricity. As power lines litter the horizon where forests once sprouted, owls, hawks, and herons are left with no choice but to gamble their lives in order to survive.

Joshua Ralph is a graduate of 2D-experimental animation at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. He enjoys spending his time drawing characters and looking at birds.
