Synopsis
In the wild west, two estranged lovers are brought together after many years over many miles to duke it out over a gold treasure. Before we find out the treasure is not worth the emotional sacrifice, it’s too late. Their selfish romance will be remembered in the musical stylings of a folk storyteller.

In filmmaking, the pen has been a liberating tool to design a world where the tables have turned and I, as a gay man, feel powerful and uninhibited. Recalling the 60’s Hollywood folk duets sung by straight pairings such as Nancy & Lee, “Painted Gold” infiltrates the conservative heterosexual western with a queer romance starring a drag queen and her lover boy.

Director, actor, and actual human boy, Ethan Rhodes, debuts his drag persona, ‘Human Girl’. Throughout his career at Emily Carr, Ethan has explored with his films how the presence of queer lifestyle in a story is perceived by a surrounding heteronormative society. He recognizes the power that heterosexual characters wield on screen so, this time, he chooses to solely focus on telling a queer love story, unconcerned with any binary commentary.
