Film Synopsis:
Nathan is a young man who struggles to make friends. As an outcome, he is exceptionally lonely and starved for attention and friendship. Nathan starts his day being ignored by his coworkers and returns home to spend the night alone in his house. His neighbour Daniel greets him and invites him to watch the sports game when he enters the house. Nathan agrees, and the two become instant friends. Daniel invites Nathan to a meeting for a group he is a part of and mentions that they would be happy to have him around. Nathan agrees to attend.
At the meeting, he meets Flynn, the religious group's charismatic leader. Flynn is engaging and friendly towards Nathan and instantly takes him under his wing. Nathan begins to become enthralled by the group and their beliefs. One night after a group meeting, Daniel says something that causes Nathan to question his dedication to the group and decides to report his friend to Flynn. Flynn asks the group to cease all contact with Daniel, to ‘disconnect’ from him and tells Nathan that he will do the same if he wishes to join them.
Artist's Statement:
Artist's Statement:
My work deals with contemporary social and political issues. I am fascinated by dissecting the ways various political or religious movements present themselves and how their use of language and beliefs appeals to different groups of people. Through my practice, I have attempted to write stories showing this intricacy in dialogue and how even the most mundane placement of words has a purpose by trying to win debates and establish a narrative.
I am heavily influenced by documentary cinema, notable people like Louis Theroux, who explores fringe and sometimes controversial political and religious groups. Acknowledging that these fringe groups exist is something that I feel is important for society to recognise; in my work, I attempt to show in specific cases how these groups work and hope to identify how people on the fringe cab be brought back to earth.
